I decided that I had put off ordering photos from my digital camera (an old Canon A70) for far too long, so sat down last Sunday and sent off for around 50 photos from Photobox. Well, it was more due to the fact that they gave me 30 free seven by fives as an incentive for me to wake up my dormant account. So good job Photobox, your marketing worked out for the both of us.
I ordered them at around 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon, received an email to say they had been dispatched on Monday and they arrived late today. That’s pretty good going. Those worried about their photos being damaged in the post should rest assured that they come in sturdy packaging. My two eight by twelves came in a Pringles-can style cardboard tube, so they weren’t in any danger, the eight by tens came backed by cardboard and the remaining seven by fives just came in a normal photo sleeve–like the ones you get from the regular photo processors. All of the packaging was wrapped in opaque plastic so no moisture could get in either. It does sound like a lot of packaging, but it was well thought out. The only reason I’m saying this is because I tire of Amazon-esque packaging that probably takes up much of the Amazon to make–not to mention the annoying leaflets bundled with everything.
The print quality is impressive; two quick tips:
Didn’t use the Java upload interface, but the normal form based one worked just as well. Used the web-based Javascript crop to change the photos from computer-resolution to print-dimensions. Everything from start to finish was done by using Firefox. So there: two thumbs up for Photobox; I don’t mind endorsing them. These days it’s nice to see a well thought-out decidedly Web 1.0 website that works well, rather than a bunch of Web 2.0 magic just thrown in for Web 2.0’s sake.
