Back from “bopping” to Elton John at his concert in Carrow Road football stadium, Norwich. Elton and his band were backed by fantastic acoustics, the football people just left the staging of the set to the professionals, and it really made the difference.
Needless to say his voice was also a deciding factor to how good it sounded, Lulu was on before Elton but she just couldn’t fill the whole stadium, although to her credit it’s an achievement being up there considering her age.
Elton did many covers of his new album Peachtree Road like “They Call Her the Cat” and the brilliant “Turn the Lights Out When You Leave”. He also did a magnificent rendition of his classic “Rocket Man” which lasted around 13 minutes. To either side of the stage there were giant screens that showed a journey through the planets, it was nice to have the visuals coinciding with the music so perfectly. In his Peachtree Road
album he was backed by a gospel choir, he said they sounded so good that he had to take them on tour with him, so there they were all the way from Atlanta, Georgia. His album is said to have the kind of soul influence, and they gave the important authentic sound.
Delia Smith said everyone was “bopping” in one of the boxes. I think by the end of “Crocodile Rock” everyone in the whole stadium was “bopping”. Some said the ground that covered the “sacred turf” of the pitch was vibrating a lot to the music, I didn’t know as I enjoyed a nice clear view (with binoculars admittedly) sitting on one of the chairs in the stand diagonally opposite him.
The lead guitarist was very good, I can’t remember his name right now, so I think I’ll leave it for tomorrow. He played an assortment of guitars including a very swish deep red Fender Strat (the kind I want) and a twelve string. Night everyone!
