G4 doing the wall-sit test

Ok, I’m not a big opera fan, no not even that Opera. Well I suppose it’s never something that I have experienced, I have been to many West End musicals, but just not of the operatic kind. Something to look forward to perhaps…

My nanny (and many others) follow those instant pop-star programmes very carefully. I personally can’t stand them as they raise the profile of no doubt talented people artificially. Talent is only part of the way there, I know too well that you need determination and a strong will to get where you want to go and succeed. These ’singers’ are swiftly crushed by their towering profile when they can’t live up to it, like the brief rubbish that was Hear Say.

Following on, after I had finished cutting my nanny’s lawns, she put on G4 while I was sitting down to a cup of tea. I was pleasantly surprised, the first track on was a nice ice-breaker–a cover of “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen. If they added some guitar lead, it could have quite easily passed for the real of thing if you just heard a snippet. But they didn’t– this I am pleased with as if I wanted to listen to Bohemian Rhapsody I would just listen to the original. I like original things, and G4 have quite a distinct sound, so you don’t feel cheated when the guitar lead is replaced by violins.

I have thought a little on why I am not a big opera fan–maybe I am? Do you have to be in a opera house to appreciate opera? I think when a lot of people sneer their noses up at pure vanilla classical music or opera, they don’t realise how much they listen to it. For instance I’m sure you don’t recognise “Nessun Dorma” but you sure have heard of it before, whether on an advert or film. When people say classical or opera is dying, I say it’ll always be lurking in the background, and people will always buy it standalone because it can bring back the associated memories of a much loved film, advert, or videogame.
