Garden State

January 22nd, 2005

Being a big fan of Leon (a.k.a. The Professional) and many other films starring the charismatic Natalie Portman I was more than interested in seeing Garden State. An indie film directed by another favourite actor of mine; Zach Braff of Scrubs fame. Scrubs is great because it’s one of the few programmes that make me genuinely laugh. Scrubs is playing on Paramount lately every night at about 9 if you want to catch it.

A colourful picture of Nat and Zach

I can definitely say that the film wasn’t a disappointment. Sure, some write it off because it’s full of touchy feely angst that seems to be permeating through the current youth culture, but that’s exactly why I like it. I’m fed up with most current films - they are either purposely deplorable to scintillate the media, or coated in sugar. It’s nice to watch a meandering tale, and reflect on where your own little stream is going, and where it will end up.

Short post today, I’ve just eaten some mistaken Bolognaise that might have been in the freezer for an arbitrary amount of time. Hopefully Guinness and sleep will cure it.

[…] The episode with the scooters was reminiscent of Garden State, I am reliably informed by H. that the proper word is “intertextuality”. At the time there seemed to be a big connection, but on retrospect I doubt there was, I should have remembered that they didn’t have scooters in Garden State, and instead it was a motorcycle with a side car (see above). Well actually I could have left this paragraph out, but I’ll be damned if I let that nice little pixel border image (see above) go to waste. Many people online are saying that the scooters on Scrubs were Vespas, but I could have sworn they said “Venice” on the side. Wouldn’t say they’re my cup-of-tea though, I like to think I can potentially overtake mopeds on my bike. I do dislike their high pitched engine noise–bzzzzzzzt! I’m looking forward to when the Garden State DVD comes out in the UK– or rather Amazon.co.uk. Some interesting trivia is that you can set the language to English or Klingon. […]

[…] I first got into The Shins in 2005 after watching Garden State. The twenties version of sixties The Graduate, to which it nods its head subtly with the inclusion of The Only Living Boy in New York. Like many people, my favourite song was New Slang, so I promptly bought the “Oh, Inverted World” CD and was treated to something more unusual than what I had expected, but still wonderful. […]
